1 reason that the jedi did not sence the darkside in Palpatine was that they were already dealing with his apprentices until it was to late to stop him. First the jedi was fighting Darth Maul then when he was killed Count Dooku showed up so they could not hunt for the Sith Master and then when they got a chance to find and kill the Sith Master Palpatine they had to deal with Darth Vader. Also the Republic was in a war with the robots so that took a lot of atention off of Palpatine too.

Very true. even when Obi-Wan had misgivings about Palpatine's rise to power in Episode III, I don't think he would have picked him as the Sith Lord

Yeah and if Yoda could not pick up on that Palpatine was the Sith Lord that they were looking for how could Obi-Wan sence it.
