The Flood killed him, I do believe, just like they killed every other living thing. However, somehow they found out he had implants that held some very important information (I can't really remember what it was). Thus, a gravemind began to form around his dead body, trying to use the implants and trying to draw out the information it needed... I think.

the implants had the location of earth which is what they wanted.
and yeah, i read that they turned him into a combat form (the typical human flood. ugly thing) before he became a proto gravemind. but my question is how was he still alive? "Chief, don't be a fool; leave me" "I gave you an order soldier now pull out!"
