No-one knows my friend. I don't think there have been any official statements.

Well we can make up stories which may of resulted in malak losing half his face.

My theory is Malak was drunk the one night after celebrating the success of finding the star forge. He excused a baby rancor for a beautiful young lady. He tried to kiss her but the baby rancor bit his face off. Malak then went into the little boys room to cry.
